Collaboration, data and teamwork have driven impressive results, where our cleaning team partnered with our client to tackle waste and improve recycling outcomes across the site.
The initiative began after a detailed waste audit revealed that two docks alone were responsible for 70% of the total general waste, with almost 69% of that material identified as recyclable. Recognising the opportunity for improvement, the team developed a focused plan to reduce waste and boost recovery rates during the month of July 2025.
“We wanted to understand exactly where our waste was coming from and how we could make a difference,” said Mamun Abdulla, Regional Operations Manager, who led the project in conjunction with Cleaning Manager Bed Nirula. “Once we had the audit results, it was clear we were targeting the right areas and that we could achieve real change with the right approach.”
To support the initiative, additional resources were introduced during key hours, along with improved signage, lighting and on-site education for retailers. The Cleaning team worked closely with retailers to sort waste correctly and report back to our client on the progress.
“The purpose was mainly about education,” Mamun explained. “We spent the first week teaching retailers how to separate their waste properly. By the second week, we started to see a big difference – general waste collections dropped from six times a week to just two and a half.”
The results spoke for themselves. In just three weeks, general waste fell by 28.1%. This saw the site’s diversion rate climb to 72.8%, alongside improvements in dock cleanliness and pest control. Mamun credited the success to the strong partnership between our client and the onsite team. “None of this would have been possible without the dedication of the team. They worked day and night to educate retailers, monitor performance, and maintain high standards,” he said.
This success has since set the benchmark for other sites, demonstrating how collaboration and a hands-on approach can deliver tangible environmental and operational results. Congratulations to everyone involved in this important initiative.
