Celebrating Pride Month at Glad Group

At Glad Group, we are committed to cultivating safe and inclusive workplaces where everyone feels respected and valued. We have prioritised Pride and support for the LGBTQIA+ community to align with International Pride Month throughout June. Pride Month is dedicated to the uplifting of LGBTQIA+ voices, a celebration of LGBTQIA+ culture, and the support of LGBTQIA+ rights.

Pride, celebrated in June to commemorate the 1969 Stonewall uprising in New York City, marks a pivotal moment in LGBTQIA+ history. Despite legal wins like the legalisation of homosexuality and same-sex marriage in Australia, global and local challenges persist. Globally, numerous countries criminalise same-sex activity, and some even impose the death penalty for it. Locally, LGBTQIA+ individuals face hurdles in blood donation, adoption, and systemic discrimination. Pride remains essential to advocate for acceptance, love, and equality worldwide.

In line with this commitment, our People and Culture team has developed various initiatives to empower our workforce to actively contribute to our company’s purpose of ‘creating welcoming experiences and safe places, every day’.

These initiatives include:

  • The Progress Pride Pin
  • Gender pronouns added to Glad Group email signatures
  • Workshop with Minus18
  • Spreading respect in our workplace

Introducing the Progress Pride Pin

We are introducing the Progress Pride Pin, allowing our people to visibly express their pride and/or allyship to the LGBTQIA+ community. Our Senior Leadership Team participated in a recent photoshoot to showcase the Progress Pride Pins and support Pride Month.

Gender pronouns added to Glad Group email signatures.

Did you know that a person’s gender pronouns are an important part of their identity? When we respect that, we are sending a message that our workplace is a supportive environment where everyone is equally valued.

Workshop with Minus18

On June 11th, managers and supervisors will attend a unique workshop gaining insight into why International Pride Month is so significant for the LGBTQIA+ community. The workshop will also provide information on the barriers and challenges experienced by the community. It will highlight the importance of active allyship and practical tips for supporting LGBTQIA+ friends, colleagues, and customers.

What is Minus18?

Minus18 is a not-for-profit organisation that provides life-affirming mental health programs tackling social isolation by creating spaces where LGBTQIOA+ youth belong.

“We offer peer support to LGBTQIA+ youth through articles, interviews, and video content, so young people can access free help online no matter what part of Australia they’re from – or the support they have from school or families”.

Since 2011, more than 2.5 million people, including families, schools, and workplaces, have accessed Minus18’s free online articles.

Spreading respect in your workplace

Being aware of our workplace behaviours and how they could make another person feel is the first step in creating a positive workplace for all. It is the responsibility of all of us to be aware of the things we say and do and how they make others feel.

Respect@Work training was sparked by the employment law changes over the past two years. These changes put a focus on how we can be more proactive and exercise a positive duty around making sure our workplaces are respectful, inclusive, and welcoming. We are also rolling out the training as an education and awareness piece, so the entire company is aware of what these changes are, how they are affected by them and what the expectations are moving forward about creating these environments.
